Unique Activities in the Area
I love trying new things. Food? Absolutely. I've actually eaten live termites FROM THE MOUND, and surprisingly, they weren't terrible. DIY projects for decorating my house? Oh, yes - I've done them. I even have the mismatched cherrywood-stained bar chairs to prove it (I forgot to shake the stain before applying it to one of them - both turned out pretty, though!).
However, my favorite thing is to explore new activities. Below is a list of some of the activities available in the Portland Metro area that I either already love or want to try. I'll probably repost this at the beginning of next summer as well, considering several are water-based. Nevertheless, it's not too late for this season either!
Rowing - Olympic Style
Paddle-boarding and Dragon Boat Racing have both had their time in the limelight. However, were you aware that the Olympic sport of Rowing is accessible to us here in the Pacific Northwest? Rowing is a sport that engages 86% of the muscles in your body (when done correctly). It’s a combination of endurance and resistance training in one smooth, joint-friendly movement. It’s a sport that caters to all ages (although it's advisable to consult your doctor if you have any physical concerns/issues). Lake Oswego Community Rowing, located in the heart of Lake Oswego on the Willamette River, offers programs for ages 12 to 100+. I personally have had the opportunity to celebrate an individual's 84th birthday in the boat.
Don’t know how to row and feeling intimidated to jump in? They offer classes for that! "Learn to Row" is a month-long course designed to introduce you to the basics of rowing, specifically sculling (using two oars). It’s a small-group program that provides an excellent introduction to the sport.
What’s the surprising benefit of joining? The community! Being a member of this club for over a year now, I can personally attest to the strong sense of community that is being fostered within this club. And the best part? If you’re beyond college, you’re considered a “master”!
WhiteWater Kayaking
This is definitely on my to-do list. I grew up whitewater rafting and LOVE it. That said, I’ve never had the opportunity to jump into a whitewater kayak! I want to learn to roll and face the waves face first. In addition to training opportunities for learning how to whitewater kayak, they also offer tours, rentals, and special certifications - such as swift water rescue. If you take a look at a river and crave the freedom that a kayak can bring, I’d strongly recommend looking into a course so that you can explore safely. There are rivers throughout the Pacific Northwest that are phenomenal for kayakers of all skill levels!
Water Skiing - Show Ski Team
I first became aware of the Portland Water Spectacular Show Ski Team when I first attended West Linn’s Old Time Fair a few years ago. Portland Water Spectacular is a local non-profit organization that includes team members age 5 - 80. The home site (for practices) is the Willamette River in West Linn and run from April through October. The best part? They’ll teach you how to water ski! Then the team performs throughout the summer at festivals across the Pacific Northwest.
Rock Climbing
During my younger and single days, I returned home for Christmas and coincidentally encountered a few high school friends while out and about. In two separate social situations, two friends suggested that I take up climbing – one for its fitness benefits ("I lost three inches off my waist!") and the other for social purposes ("Want to meet interesting people? Join a climbing gym - you’ll have a date in no time!"). Within days, I enrolled in classes at a local gym and began the following week.
At that time, I resided in Bend, Oregon, and was incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to learn indoor climbing skills at the gym before progressing to outdoor climbing at Smith Rock State Park. Presently residing in the picturesque area of West Linn, I frequently enjoy excursions to The Circuit Bouldering Gym in Tigard. The Circuit stands out as another establishment that caters to individuals of all ages. They offer a variety of classes (group sessions starting from age 13 and private instruction for ages 5 and up), youth clubs (divided into age groups 5-6, 7-10, 11-14), and even include a youth section featuring a slide. Now that I am no longer young or single, my enthusiasm for the climbing gym remains unwavering - and I am delighted to mention that my 4-year-old accompanies me on these outings!
Ninja Warrior
In this household, it's impossible to watch an episode of American Ninja Warrior without witnessing at least two members leaping around on the furniture, attempting to conquer their own set of obstacles. Up until recently, my husband was undoubtedly one of those two! Thanks to Skyhook Ninja Fitness, both of my little ninjas can now engage in invigorating workouts - my daughter adores her class, my son (who is almost 2 years old) is eagerly awaiting his turn to start, and my husband finds immense enjoyment in the adult workout sessions as well. This environment is tailored for families and offers something delightful for every individual; it's akin to a vast playground. If you too nurture aspirations of competing on American Ninja Warrior, I wholeheartedly recommend exploring this facility. Remarkably, one of the instructors has even showcased their skills on the show!
